How do I translate a driver's licence into English?

Check whether the destination accepts a translation, requires a specific translator or asks for an international driving permit; a translation alone may not authorize driving.

Ask the destination what it accepts

Requirements for using a foreign driver's licence differ by country, length of stay and purpose. A rental company, employer, licensing authority or other organization may have different rules.

Before ordering, ask whether it accepts an English translation, requires a certified translation, an international driving permit or a particular form of document. A translation explains the licence details; it does not by itself grant permission to drive.

What should I provide for the translation?

Keep the complete card in frame and make sure small print is readable. Do not cover licence numbers or alter dates unless the receiving authority specifically instructs you how to submit a redacted copy.

  • a clear scan or photo of the front and back of the licence;
  • all visible categories, restrictions, dates and issuing-authority details;
  • the destination country and the organization requesting the translation;
  • any written instructions about certification, format or additional documents.

Pay attention to categories and restrictions

Vehicle categories, codes, restrictions and validity dates can affect how a receiving authority interprets the document. Ensure the scan shows them clearly and ask the requester whether it has a preferred format or terminology.

If your licence contains information in more than one language or has a separate paper record, ask whether the full set of documents is needed.

Check before you rely on the translated document

  • confirm whether translation is enough for your specific purpose;
  • check if the receiving party requires certification or a specific translator;
  • ask whether an international driving permit or original licence is also required;
  • verify the translated names, licence categories and dates against the card.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive abroad with an English translation of my licence?

Not necessarily. Driving rules depend on the destination and your circumstances. A translation may not replace an international driving permit or another requirement; check with the relevant authority.

Do I need to translate both sides of the licence?

Yes, if the reverse contains categories, restrictions, codes or other information. Provide clear images of both sides for assessment.

Will a translation be accepted by a car rental company?

Acceptance depends on the company and location. Ask the rental provider what it requires before travel.
